Winter Boiler Protection — Prevent Freezing and Damage

Protect your boiler during BC winter cold snaps. Prevent frozen condensate pipes, maintain pressure, and keep your system running reliably.

Protecting Your Boiler During Cold Snaps

High-efficiency condensing boilers are vulnerable to frozen condensate pipes during cold snaps. A frozen condensate pipe causes the boiler to shut down on the coldest day when you need heat most.

Condensate Pipe Protection

Insulate all external condensate pipe runs with foam insulation. Ensure pipes slope continuously downward. During extreme cold, heat tape provides reliable protection. If your condensate line freezes, thaw it with warm water — never use a blowtorch or heat gun.

System Pressure During Cold Weather

Check your pressure gauge when the system is cold — it should read 1.0-1.5 bar. If pressure drops below 1.0 bar, use the filling loop to repressurize. During extended absences in winter, leave heating on at a low setting (12-15°C) to prevent system freezing.

Safety Reminder

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
