If the pilot flame goes out, the thermocouple cools, the electrical current stops, and the gas valve closes to prevent unburned gas from accumulating. A failing thermocouple is the most common cause of a pilot light that will not stay lit on a gas water heater. How to Tell If Your Thermocouple Is Bad
The classic symptom of a failed thermocouple is: you follow the pilot relighting procedure, hold the pilot button down for 60 seconds, release it, and the pilot goes out immediately. If the pilot lights with a spark but dies as soon as you release the button, the thermocouple is likely the culprit. Other signs include the pilot flame touching but not fully enveloping the thermocouple tip (misalignment), a visible kink or damage to the copper tube, or a white or crusty buildup on the thermocouple tip. Before assuming the thermocouple is bad, verify the pilot flame is strong enough — a weak or yellow flame may indicate a dirty pilot orifice rather than a thermocouple issue.
DIY Replacement Steps and Cost

Steps: turn off the gas supply, remove the access panel and burner assembly, unscrew the old thermocouple from the gas valve, remove the old thermocouple from the bracket near the pilot, install the new thermocouple with the tip properly positioned in the pilot flame path, reconnect to the gas valve, turn on the gas, light the pilot, and verify it stays lit.
