Electronic Gas Control Valves
Modern gas water heaters use electronic control boards with diagnostic LEDs. The LED flashes a code when a fault is detected. Common codes vary by brand but typical patterns include: 1 flash — normal operation, 2 flashes — thermopile voltage low (pilot issue), 3 flashes — water temperature sensor fault, 4 flashes — control valve circuit fault, 5 flashes — system error.
Electric Water Heater Diagnostics
Electric water heaters typically do not have diagnostic displays. Diagnosis is done by testing: element resistance (should read 10-20 ohms), thermostat continuity, and voltage at the elements. If one element fails, the water will be warm but not hot. If both fail, no hot water. The upper thermostat typically controls the upper element; the lower thermostat senses water temperature at the bottom and controls the lower element.
Using Diagnostic Information
When you call for service, provide any error codes or LED flash patterns you observe. This helps the technician prepare the correct diagnostic approach and bring the right parts. Most electronic gas control valves can display stored error codes that reveal the history of fault conditions — helpful for diagnosing intermittent issues that are not currently active.
