Manufacturer Warranty vs Installer Warranty

The manufacturer warranty covers defects in materials and workmanship of the equipment itself — typically 5-10 years on parts, 10 years on compressors (heat pumps), and limited lifetime on heat exchangers (furnaces). The installer warranty covers the installation labour — most reputable contractors in Vancouver offer 1-2 years minimum, with premium contractors offering 5-10 years. These are separate: if the equipment fails due to a manufacturing defect, the manufacturer provides the replacement part but you pay the installer's labour to install it unless the labour is covered by your installer warranty. Always ask about both warranties before purchasing.
What Voids Your Warranty
Common actions that void HVAC warranties include: improper installation by an unlicensed contractor, failure to perform required annual maintenance (manufacturers require proof of annual service for warranty claims), operating the system outside its specified temperature ranges, using non-OEM replacement parts, modifying the equipment, installing the equipment in a commercial application when designed for residential use, damage from improper electrical supply or voltage, and damage from floods, fires, or other acts of nature. Protect your warranty by keeping records of annual maintenance, only using licensed contractors for service, and using OEM parts for all repairs.
How to Register Your Warranty
Most manufacturers require online registration within 90 days of installation to activate the full warranty period. Without registration, the warranty may be reduced from 10 years to 5 years. Your installer should handle registration as part of the installation process. After installation, you should receive a warranty confirmation email or certificate from the manufacturer. Keep this document with your home records along with the model and serial numbers of all equipment. If you do not receive a warranty confirmation within 30 days of installation, contact your installer to verify the warranty was registered. This step is frequently overlooked and can cost thousands later.
BC Consumer Protection for HVAC
British Columbia's Consumer Protection Act applies to HVAC purchases and installations. If a contractor fails to complete the work as contracted, you have legal recourse through BC's Civil Resolution Tribunal (for claims under $5,000) or BC Supreme Court (for larger claims). The BC Better Business Bureau offers dispute resolution services. Technical Safety BC can investigate complaints about licensed gas fitters. If you paid using a credit card, you may have additional protection through your credit card company's purchase protection and chargeback rights.
