Frost and Defrost Management
Vancouver damp winters create ideal conditions for frost on the outdoor coil. Normal operation: the heat pump defrosts every 60-90 minutes for 5-15 minutes. You will see steam rise from the unit during defrost. If ice remains between defrost cycles or the defrost does not activate, there is a problem requiring service.
Auxiliary Heat Activation
If your heat pump cannot keep up with heating demand, auxiliary (backup) heat activates. In Vancouver cold-climate heat pumps, aux heat should rarely activate (outdoor temperatures below -5°C to -10°C). If aux heat runs in mild weather (above 0°C), the heat pump may have an issue — call for service.
Snow and Debris Management
Keep the outdoor unit clear of snow, leaves, and debris. Maintain 24 inches of clearance on all sides. After snowstorms, gently brush snow off the unit with a soft broom. Do not use a shovel. Do not cover the unit — it needs to breathe to operate. A snow stand (elevated mount) helps in heavy snow areas.
