What Thermistors Do

Heat pumps have multiple temperature sensors (thermistors) that monitor: outdoor coil temperature, indoor coil temperature, outdoor air temperature, and refrigerant line temperatures. The control board uses these readings to regulate compressor speed, fan speed, and defrost cycles.

Signs of Thermistor Failure

The outdoor temperature display shows an obviously wrong temperature, the system operates in the wrong mode, the defrost cycle does not initiate or runs too frequently, the system runs poorly in extreme weather, or the control board displays a thermistor error code.

Replacement Cost

Thermistor replacement costs $200-400 including the sensor ($20-80) and labour ($150-250). Different sensors have different resistance curves — using the wrong sensor type will cause incorrect operation. Our technicians carry OEM sensors for all major heat pump brands.
