What the Solenoid Does

The reversing valve solenoid is an electromagnetic coil that shifts the reversing valve to switch between heating and cooling modes. When the coil is energized, it moves the valve internal mechanism. A failed solenoid prevents the system from switching modes.

Signs of Solenoid Failure

The heat pump is stuck in one mode (heating or cooling), you hear a clicking sound from the valve but the system does not switch, the heat pump blows cold air in heating mode, or the solenoid coil feels cold when it should be warm (energized).

Replacement Cost

Solenoid coil replacement costs $200-400 including the coil ($50-150) and labour ($150-$250). If the reversing valve internal mechanism is stuck (not just the coil), full valve replacement is needed ($800-1,500). Our technicians test the coil first before recommending valve replacement.
