Strata Approval
Most Vancouver stratas require written approval for balcony heat pump installations. Submit: a detailed installation plan showing the proposed unit location, noise ratings (choose units under 55 dB), and proof of professional installation standards. Some stratas prohibit outdoor units on balconies entirely.
Noise and Vibration
Choose the quietest heat pump available — look for 55 dB or less. Install vibration isolation pads under the unit to prevent noise transmission to neighbouring suites below and beside yours. Some stratas require sound blankets or enclosures.
Size and Clearance
The balcony must have adequate space for: the outdoor unit (typically 36 x 36 inches minimum), clearances around the unit (12-24 inches on each side for airflow), and clearance for the balcony door or window to operate. Measure your balcony space before purchasing.
