Required Permits

Most heat pump installations require: an electrical permit (for connecting the outdoor unit and indoor unit), and a building or mechanical permit (depending on the municipality). Some municipalities also require a separate gas permit if gas line work is involved.

Inspection Process

After installation, a municipal inspector verifies: electrical connections are properly sized and protected, line set connections are insulated and sealed, the condenser pad or bracket is secure, clearances from windows and property lines are met, and the system meets local noise bylaws.

Contractor Responsibility

Your HVAC contractor should pull all required permits and schedule inspections. Never hire a contractor who asks you to pull permits yourself. Permit fees ($150-400) are typically included in the installation quote. Unpermitted work can create issues during home sales or insurance claims.
