How to Monitor Heat Pump Energy
BC Hydro online account: tracks daily electricity usage — compare usage year-over-year for the same billing period. Smart thermostat: provides estimated heating and cooling runtime and energy consumption. Dedicated energy monitor (Sense, Emporia Vue): tracks the heat pump as a separate circuit — shows exact kWh usage. Sense costs $300-400, Emporia Vue costs $150-200.
What to Look For
Baseline usage: track summer (cooling) and winter (heating) usage separately. If usage increases more than 10% year-over-year without a weather explanation, the heat pump efficiency may be declining. Monitor auxiliary heat usage separately — aux heat running more than expected indicates an issue. Compare heating seasonal performance factor (HSPF) efficiency year to year.
Using Energy Data
Set monthly energy budgets based on past usage. Track the impact of: filter changes (clean filter = lower usage), coil cleaning (clean coils = lower usage), thermostat adjustments, and auxiliary heat lockout temperature changes. Share energy data with your service technician — they can correlate efficiency changes with system performance data.
