Standard Electrical Requirements

A central ducted heat pump typically requires: a 30-60 amp 240V dedicated circuit, 10-6 AWG copper wire depending on amperage, and an outdoor disconnect within sight of the unit. Ductless mini-splits: 15-30 amp 240V circuit per outdoor unit, with 14-10 AWG wire. Most units require a surge protector for the control board.

Panel Capacity Check

A typical Vancouver home with 100-amp panel and existing loads (range, dryer, hot water) may have 20-40 amps of spare capacity — enough for a ductless mini-split but potentially insufficient for a large central heat pump. A 200-amp panel upgrade ($2,500-5,000) may be needed for central systems with electric backup heat.

Permit and Inspection

Electrical work for heat pump installation requires a permit and inspection by the municipality. Your HVAC contractor or a licensed electrician should handle the electrical connection.
