General Sizing Guidelines
For Vancouver climate: 12,000 BTU (1 ton) covers up to 500 sq ft, 18,000 BTU (1.5 ton) covers 500-800 sq ft, 24,000 BTU (2 ton) covers 800-1,200 sq ft, and 36,000 BTU (3 ton) covers 1,200-2,000 sq ft. These are estimates — actual sizing depends on insulation, window area, and ceiling height.
Room-by-Room Recommendations
Master bedroom (200-300 sq ft): 9,000-12,000 BTU. Living room / great room (300-500 sq ft): 12,000-18,000 BTU. Open concept kitchen-living: 18,000-24,000 BTU. Basement suite (500-800 sq ft): 12,000-18,000 BTU. Home office (100-200 sq ft): 7,000-9,000 BTU (smallest available size).
Multi-Zone Considerations
A multi-zone system connects multiple indoor units to one outdoor unit. The outdoor unit must be sized for the total capacity of all indoor units, but cannot exceed the maximum connected capacity. For example, a 36,000 BTU outdoor unit can support up to 3-4 indoor units of varying sizes. Each indoor unit operates independently.
