Challenges with Open Concept
Open concept layouts (kitchen-dining-living combined) have high heating/cooling loads due to volume. A single mini-split in one corner may not distribute air evenly across the entire space — the area near the unit is comfortable while far corners are not. High ceilings exacerbate temperature stratification (hot air rises, floor stays cool).
Best Solutions
Option 1: A larger single unit (18,000-24,000 BTU) with high CFM fan for good air circulation. Option 2: Two smaller units (9,000-12,000 BTU each) installed in different areas for more even coverage. Option 3: A ceiling cassette unit (installed in the ceiling) that distributes air in 360 degrees — best for truly open spaces.
Supplemental Heating
For very large open concept spaces: add a ceiling fan to push warm air down from the ceiling in winter, use a radiant floor heating system as supplemental heat (warms from the ground up), or install a smaller dedicated unit for the kitchen area separate from the living area.
