Why Birds Nest in Units

The warm, sheltered space inside a heat pump outdoor unit is attractive to birds for nesting. Nesting material blocks airflow, can damage the fan blade, and debris in the coil reduces efficiency. Nesting birds also create noise and leave droppings.

Prevention Methods

Install a heat pump cover during off-season months (spring/fall when the unit is not running heavily). Use plastic mesh or screening around the unit base (must not block airflow). Install bird spikes on top of the unit. Use reflective tape or decoys near the unit. Commercial heat pump bird guards are available.

Safe Removal

If birds have nested: do not disturb active nests if birds are present (check local wildlife regulations). Wait until the nest is abandoned, then remove nesting material carefully. Wear gloves and a mask — bird droppings can carry diseases. Clean the coil and fan blade after removal.
