Plan HVAC First
HVAC should be one of the first systems planned in any renovation — not an afterthought. Decisions about equipment location, ductwork, piping, and venting affect the entire renovation design. Planning upfront prevents: exposed ductwork, insufficient heating/cooling in new spaces, and costly retrofits after construction.
Renovation Considerations by Room
Kitchen: add a dedicated make-up air system for the range hood (required for high-CFM hoods). Bathroom: ensure exhaust fans vent outside (not into the attic). Basement suite: separate zone or dedicated system for temperature control. Addition: extend existing ductwork or add a ductless mini-split. Attic conversion: mini-split or ducted system from an air handler.
Working with Your Contractor
Coordinate with both your general contractor and HVAC contractor. The GC frames the space — the HVAC contractor installs the systems. Timing: HVAC rough-in happens after framing but before drywall. Final connections and commissioning happen after drywall and painting. Get HVAC input early in the design phase.
