Home Office HVAC — Stay Comfortable While Working from Home

Optimal Home Office Temperature

The ideal temperature for productivity is 21-23°C in winter and 23-25°C in summer. Research shows cognitive performance declines below 20°C or above 26°C. If your home office is in a basement, it may be cooler than the rest of the home. If in a sunny upstairs room, it may be warmer. Zoning (separate thermostat for the office area) provides the most consistent comfort.

Ventilation and Air Quality

Good ventilation improves focus and reduces drowsiness — CO2 levels rise in occupied rooms without adequate fresh air. Options: open a window for 5-10 minutes every hour, use a portable air purifier with a HEPA filter, run the furnace fan continuously to circulate and filter air, or install an HRV/ERV for continuous fresh air exchange. Plants also help improve indoor air quality.

Noise Considerations

HVAC noise can be distracting during video calls. Ductless mini-splits operate at 19-30 dB (whisper quiet). Central forced air systems operate at 35-50 dB (audible but not distracting). Noisy HVAC systems may need: blower motor repair, duct insulation for sound dampening, or relocation of registers away from the desk area. A portable fan can also help mask HVAC noise during calls.

Safety Reminder

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
