Heating System Preparation
Schedule professional furnace or boiler maintenance before November. Replace the air filter with a fresh one. Test the heating system before cold weather arrives. Listen for unusual sounds during the first heating cycle. Check carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries. Clear the area around the heating equipment.
Weatherization Tasks
Check weatherstripping around doors and windows — replace compressed or missing seals. Seal foundation cracks and gaps around pipes. Insulate exposed pipes in unheated areas. Program your thermostat for the winter schedule. If you have a heat pump, ensure it is ready for heating mode.
Emergency Preparedness
Have a space heater available as emergency backup. Know the location of: the furnace/boiler shutoff switch, the gas shutoff valve, and the main water shutoff. Save your HVAC company emergency phone number. Check that your snow shovel and ice melt are accessible for clearing vent pipes and the gas meter.
