Pre-Winter Preparation (October-November)

Schedule professional furnace maintenance (combustion analysis, cleaning, safety checks). Replace air filter with a fresh one. Test the furnace before cold weather arrives. Check carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries. Clear the area around the furnace of stored items. Test your thermostat operation.

During Winter (December-February)

Check air filter monthly — replace if dirty. Monitor your gas bill for unusual increases. Listen for unusual furnace sounds. Keep snow cleared from vent pipes after storms. Keep the gas meter and regulator clear of snow. Have a space heater available as emergency backup.

Emergency Preparedness

Know the location of: the furnace shutoff switch, the gas shutoff valve, the circuit breaker for the furnace, and the main water shutoff. Keep phone numbers for: your HVAC company emergency line, FortisBC emergency line (1-800-663-9911), and 911. Keep a flashlight near the furnace.

Safety Reminder

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
