Signs of Frozen Vent Pipes

The furnace shuts off and displays an error code related to pressure switch or venting. Ice is visible at the vent termination outside. The intake or exhaust PVC pipes are blocked by ice or snow. The furnace will not restart even after resetting.

Emergency Thawing Steps

Clear snow away from both vent pipes outside. Pour warm (not boiling) water over the frozen section to thaw. Use a hair dryer on the frozen section if accessible. Do not use a heat gun or open flame — this can damage PVC pipe. Once thawed, reset the furnace. If the problem recurs, insulation or pipe relocation may be needed.

Prevention for Next Winter

Insulate exposed vent pipes with foam pipe insulation. Extend pipes beyond the eaves to prevent meltwater from dripping onto them. Install a heat trace cable on vulnerable sections ($50-150). Keep snow clear around vent terminations after every storm. Consider a vent cap with built-in heating element for chronic freezing.
