Furnace Gas Valve Clicking — Normal vs Problem Clicking

Normal Clicking

A single click when the thermostat calls for heat — the gas valve opens. A single click when the furnace reaches temperature — the gas valve closes. These are normal and indicate the valve is working. The clicks are the solenoid inside the valve engaging and disengaging.

Problem Clicking

Rapid clicking (multiple clicks in succession) — the valve is trying to open but failing. Clicking with no ignition — the valve opens but the gas does not ignite. Clicking that continues after the burners are lit — the valve is chattering and may fail soon. Chattering is caused by low voltage to the valve, a failing solenoid, or a faulty control board.

When to Replace

A gas valve that chatters or fails to open needs replacement. Replacement cost: $400-800. If the valve opens but the burner does not light, the issue may be the ignitor or gas supply, not the valve. A technician can diagnose the exact cause. Do not operate a furnace with a chattering gas valve.
