Best Indoor Humidity for Furnace in Vancouver Winter

Recommended Winter Humidity
The ideal indoor humidity for Vancouver winter is 30-40%. Below 30%: dry skin, scratchy throat, static electricity. Above 40%: window condensation (especially on older windows), risk of mould growth in corners and closets. Older homes with less insulation may need lower humidity (25-35%) to prevent condensation.
Furnace Humidifier Options
Bypass humidifier ($400-800 installed): uses furnace pressure to evaporate water — most affordable but less precise. Fan-powered humidifier ($600-1,200): has its own fan for more consistent humidity. Steam humidifier ($1,000-2,000): produces the most humidity, works independently of the furnace blower, best for tight homes.
Managing Humidity without a Humidifier
If you do not have a humidifier: place bowls of water near heat registers, use a portable room humidifier in bedrooms, air-dry laundry indoors (adds moisture and saves dryer energy), keep bathroom doors open during showers, and reduce exhaust fan usage in winter to retain moisture.
