Annual Maintenance Tasks
Replace the humidifier pad (water panel) at the start of each heating season — cost: $15-40 for the pad. Check the float valve for proper operation — a stuck float can cause overflow. Clean the reservoir and spray nozzle with vinegar to remove mineral deposits. Check the water supply line and saddle valve for leaks.
Signs of Humidifier Problems
No humidity increase despite the humidifier running, water leaking from the humidifier, the humidifier runs but the pad does not get wet, mineral dust near supply registers (the pad is deteriorating), or the humidifier makes unusual noises (flowing water sounds are normal but grinding indicates mechanical issues).
When to Replace vs Repair
Humidifier pad replacement: $15-40, DIY. Solenoid valve replacement: $50-100 part, $150-250 installed. Humidistat replacement: $50-100 part, $150-250 installed. If your furnace-mounted humidifier is over 10 years old and needs a major repair, replace the entire unit ($400-1,200 installed) for improved efficiency and reliability.
