Can the Heat Exchanger Be Replaced?
In theory, yes — the heat exchanger can be replaced independently. However, the labour cost ($1,500-3,000) plus part cost ($500-1,500 for most brands) often totals $2,000-4,500. A complete new furnace costs $3,500-6,500. The decision depends on furnace age and warranty coverage.
When Replacement Makes Sense
Replace the heat exchanger if: the furnace is under 8 years old and still under warranty (most heat exchangers have 10-20 year parts warranty — you pay labour only), or the furnace is a premium brand with years of life left. Replace the entire furnace if: the furnace is over 12 years old, out of warranty, or has other issues.
