Strong Gas Odour — Evacuate
If the gas smell is strong and continuous: evacuate everyone from the home immediately, do not operate any electrical switches, phones, or appliances, go outside and call 911 or your gas utility emergency line (1-800-663-9911), do not re-enter until cleared by emergency services. A strong gas smell is a life-safety emergency.
Faint, Intermittent Gas Smell
A faint gas smell that occurs only when the furnace runs, or a smell that dissipates quickly, may indicate: the burner is not adjusted correctly (incomplete combustion), the gas valve has a minor leak at the connection fitting, or there was a small gas release during the last startup cycle (normal in some cases). Call for same-day professional inspection.
Gas Smell After Service or Installation
If you smell gas after furnace service or installation: the gas connections may not have been properly tightened or tested. Turn off the gas valve at the furnace and call the company that performed the work immediately. They should return to inspect and correct the issue at no charge.
