When a Mini-Split Replaces a Furnace
Ductless mini-splits can replace gas furnaces in homes without existing ductwork — condos, townhomes, additions, and homes where installing ducts is impractical. The mini-split provides both heating and cooling from a single system. Multi-zone systems can heat/cool the entire home with individual room control.
Cost Comparison
Ductless mini-split (whole home, 3-4 zones): $10,000-15,000 installed. Gas furnace + new ductwork: $8,000-20,000+ (ductwork cost varies greatly). If your home has no ducts, a mini-split is often cheaper than installing ductwork for a gas furnace. If you have existing ducts, keeping the furnace and adding a heat pump is more economical.
Comfort Considerations
Mini-splits provide zone control — each room temperature is set independently. They are quieter than forced-air systems. They do not distribute air through ducts (no dust circulation), but they also do not provide whole-home air filtration like a ducted system.
