PSC Motors

Permanent Split Capacitor (PSC) motors are the standard single-speed motor. Cost: $150-300 for replacement. Efficiency: 60-70% efficient. Noise: moderate (blower noise at 100% speed). Found in: budget and mid-range furnaces. Pros: simple, inexpensive, easy to replace. Cons: uses more electricity, no speed variation.

ECM Motors

Electronically Commutated Motors (ECM) are variable-speed motors. Cost: $400-700 for replacement. Efficiency: 80-85% efficient. Noise: quiet (ramps up and down smoothly). Found in: mid-range and premium furnaces. Pros: 50-70% less electricity, quieter, better comfort. Cons: more expensive, complex to diagnose.

Which Motor Should You Choose?

For most Vancouver homes, an ECM motor is worth the additional cost. The electricity savings ($30-60/year) and comfort improvements (consistent temperature, quieter operation) justify the premium. If budget is the primary concern, a PSC motor with a two-stage furnace provides good value. ECM is recommended for variable-speed and modulating furnaces.
