MERV Rating Guide
MERV 8: standard filter, captures 70-85% of particles 3-10 microns (dust, pollen, dust mites). MERV 11: better filtration, captures 85-95% of particles 1-3 microns (mould spores, pet dander, smog). MERV 13: high filtration, captures 90-95% of particles 0.3-1.0 microns (bacteria, tobacco smoke, wildfire smoke particles).
MERV and Furnace Compatibility
MERV 8: works with any furnace — no airflow restriction concern. MERV 11: works with most furnaces — minor airflow restriction, acceptable for most systems. MERV 13: may restrict airflow in older furnaces with standard blowers — check your furnace manual for maximum MERV rating. ECM variable-speed blowers handle MERV 13 well.
When to Use Higher MERV
Use MERV 11: standard for good indoor air quality — balances filtration and airflow. Use MERV 13: during wildfire smoke season, if household members have allergies or asthma, or if you have pets. Return to MERV 8 or 11 after the smoke event clears. Change MERV 13 filters more frequently (every 30-60 days vs 90 days for MERV 8).
