Furnace Air Filter Direction — Which Way Does the Arrow Point?

The arrow on the filter frame indicates the direction of AIRFLOW — the arrow should point toward the furnace/blower, away from the return air duct. This means the arrow points IN toward the furnace. If the filter is installed backwards, the coarse side faces the furnace instead of the incoming air, which causes the filter to work less effectively and may restrict airflow.
How to Check Direction
Remove the filter and look at the direction of the furnace blower — the air flows toward the blower. The arrow should point the same direction as the air flows. If you are unsure, turn the furnace fan ON (from the thermostat) and feel the air flow direction with your hand at the filter slot — the arrow points with the air flow.
Consequences of Backwards Filter
A backwards filter: reduces filtration efficiency (the filter material may tear or collapse), may restrict airflow (if the filter material is pushed against the filter grille), and can cause the filter to vibrate or whistle (air bypassing the filter media). Simply flip the filter around if you notice it is backwards — no harm done unless left for extended periods.
