Standard Schedule
Basic 1-inch fiberglass filter: change every 30 days during heavy use. Pleated filter (MERV 8): change every 60-90 days. Pleated filter (MERV 11-13): change every 60 days during heavy use. Thick 4-5 inch media filter: change every 6-12 months (they have more surface area).
Seasonal Adjustments
Winter (heating season): change monthly — the furnace runs more, the filter collects more dust. Summer (cooling season): change every 60 days — the AC or heat pump runs less. Spring and fall (shoulder seasons): change every 90 days — minimal system use. Wildfire smoke season: change before and after major smoke events — replace with MERV 13 during smoke.
Signs Your Filter Needs Changing
Hold the filter up to a light: if you cannot see light through it, replace it. The filter looks dirty or grey (not white), air from vents feels weak or reduced, your energy bills are increasing, or household members are experiencing more allergy symptoms.
