Boiler Vent Types

Boilers use different vent types: stainless steel flue (for condensing boilers — PVC-compatible on most), conventional metal flue (for atmospheric draft boilers), and concentric vent (sealed combustion). Each type has different failure modes and repair requirements.

Signs of Vent Damage

Corrosion or rust on metal flue sections, cracked or separated joints, debris or animal nests in the flue terminal, water staining around vent connections (indicating condensation leakage), or the boiler backdrafting (combustion gases entering the room).

Repair Cost and Safety

Vent repair/replacement costs $300-1,500 depending on the extent. A single damaged section: $200-500. Full flue replacement: $800-1,500. A compromised boiler vent can leak CO — this is a safety emergency. Repairs should be completed before the boiler is used. CO detectors should be installed on every floor.
