What a Magnetic Filter Does
A magnetic filter is installed on the boiler return pipe. It captures magnetic sludge particles (magnetite) from the system water before they enter the boiler heat exchanger. Over time, sludge builds up in radiators and pipework, restricting water flow and reducing efficiency.
Benefits of a Magnetic Filter
Protects the boiler heat exchanger from sludge damage, improves heating efficiency (clean water transfers heat better), extends boiler life by 3-5 years, reduces the need for power flushing, and is especially important when installing a new boiler on old pipework (existing sludge will be dislodged).
Cost and Installation
Magnetic filter cost: $100-250 for the filter unit. Installation: $200-400 including filter, fittings, and labour. Most installers recommend installing on every new boiler. Filters from Fernox, MagnaClean, and Spirotech are the most reliable. Annual cleaning of the filter magnet is recommended during boiler service.
