Boiler Gas Bill Too High — Winter Cost Saving Guide

Weather Normalization

Compare your gas usage in GJ (not dollars) to the same month last year. Account for colder weather using heating degree day data available from Environment Canada. If usage increased more than 10% beyond weather effects, your boiler efficiency may have declined.

Efficiency Improvements

Annual boiler service restores 5-10% efficiency by cleaning scale from the heat exchanger. Lowering the flow temperature from 75°C to 60°C saves 5-10% on condensing boilers. Adding weather compensation saves another 5-15%. Installing a smart thermostat saves 10-15%. Combined savings: 25-40%.

When to Consider Replacement

If your boiler is over 15 years old and your gas bill is 20%+ higher than 5 years ago (adjusting for weather and carbon tax), a new condensing boiler will save $200-400/year. With FortisBC rebates and energy savings, the payback period is 5-8 years.

Safety Reminder

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
