What the Aquastat Does

The aquastat is a temperature control device that maintains boiler water temperature. It has three functions: high-limit (shuts off boiler if water overheats), low-limit (maintains minimum temperature), and circulator control (turns pump on/off based on temperature).

Signs of Aquastat Failure

The boiler water temperature does not match the aquastat setting, the boiler short-cycles or runs continuously, the circulator pump does not run when it should, or the boiler overheats and triggers the high-limit frequently. An inaccurate aquastat wastes energy and reduces comfort.

Replacement Cost

Aquastat replacement costs $300-600 including the device ($150-300) and labour ($150-300). The boiler must be partially drained. If the boiler is over 15 years old and the aquastat fails, consider boiler replacement — multiple components are likely near end of life.

Safety Reminder

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
